Home Safety During the Holidays
If you plan on leaving your home for the holidays, even just for a day or two, you might be fretting about the safety of your property.
While the festive season is a time to unwind, the stress of worrying about your empty house might make it difficult to relax.
To help ease that nagging feeling this festive season, at PropertyFox, we have compiled a few tips for securing your home while you are away.
Install A Home Alarm System
If you do not have one already, make sure to install a home alarm system in your home. While an alarm may not keep burglars from getting inside your home, it will deter some and bring the police to your home quickly, limiting what a thief is able to take. Home security systems will only work if you always remember to engage the alarm.
You Are Home, But Not Really
Make sure that you do not make your absence too obvious. While you’re away try to create the illusion that you are still at home. Tell as few people as possible about your trip. If you can’t arrange for someone to visit or house sit, cancel your newspaper deliveries and set daily alarms or set radios to turn on at regular intervals. According to ADT South Africa, there are many timer-plugs that can help you turn on lights and electronic devices.
Know Thy Neighbour and Thy Neighbourhood
Make sure you know your neighbours and your neighbourhood. Your neighbours are some of the people you should tell that you are away. Criminals often watch a property before breaking in. Alerting neighbours that they should keep an eye on your property – or even that they should have a look around every other day is beneficial.
Check Your Locks
Locks need maintenance, just like every other part of your home. Deadbolt locks on outside doors, checking the locks on sliding doors and even locking the pet entrance is important before you go away.
Don’t Leave Spare Keys in Obvious Locations
Do not leave “emergency” keys in obvious places like pot plants or under doormats. Rather leave them with a friend or neighbour you can trust.
Doing a brief assessment of any security soft spots is a critical step in keeping your home safe over the holiday season.
Take a walk around your property with a critical eye to see what changes it needs for you to keep it protected. Now that your house is secure, go and enjoy your well-deserved holiday.
