How to Make Moving House Less Stressful
PropertyFox tips for reducing stress during a move.
Moving house is usually exciting, but the process itself can be horribly overwhelming. Don’t worry, we’re here to help! Here are some of our top tips for a stress-free move.
Use to-do lists
Whether you choose to write daily, weekly or monthly to-do lists, writing down what you need to do by when means you’re far less likely to let something slip your mind. There’s a lot of admin that comes with the moving process. Writing it all down will make you feel more in control as you won’t be constantly worrying about forgetting something.
Give yourself enough time
Packing in a rush is no fun at all. Giving yourself enough time to pack in an organized and logical way will result in you arriving at your new space feeling calm and excited rather than frazzled and exhausted.
There’s a lot to do when moving house, but try to remember that not all of it needs to be done at the same time. Prioritize your tasks so that you don’t get overwhelmed.
Check the details
During a stressful time it’s easy to let some things slip and that’s okay – just be sure to double-check the important details. No one wants to book a moving van for the wrong day.
Don’t be afraid to get some help
If you’re feeling swamped, ask some of your family and friends to help you out. You know what they say: ‘many hands make light work.’ Just be sure to reward them for their efforts! Hiring packers to help you out is also an option – even if they just come over on the day of the move to help you load the van.
Try to have a thorough clear out of your home a good few weeks before you start packing. One of the best things about moving is that you get to start afresh – you don’t want to be sorting through clutter as you unpack.
In order to make the unpacking process easier, label every box and pack your things room by room. Grouping kitchen utensils and shower gels is going to make unpacking unnecessarily painful.
Take some time off
If you can take leave for a few days, do it. Moving is already taxing enough without having to deal with work stress – plus, this will give you a bit more time to sort out all those last minute odds and ends.
Keep the essentials aside
Alongside packing an overnight bag, be sure to pack an essentials box filled with the things you know you’ll need as soon as you get to your new home like the kettle, tea-bags and some mugs. Thinking ahead will make future-you very grateful.
