Eastern Cape

Living in Eastern Cape

From the sparse veld of the Karoo, to the lush forests of Tsitsikamma and the wildlife of Addo Elephant Park to the friendliness of Port Elizabeth (PE) and the unspoilt beauty of the wild coast, the Eastern Cape has it all. East London and PE are the province’s biggest cities, while other prominent towns include St Francis Bay, Grahamstown, Jeffrey’s Bay, Graaff-Reniet, Kenton, Coffee Bay, King William’s Town and Port St Johns.

The Eastern Cape’s breath-taking landscapes make this area a popular holiday destination among tourists and South Africans alike. The area is also renowned for being the birthplace of many famous politicians – particularly Nelson Mandela – and is the traditional home of the Xhosa people. Most schools, universities, shopping centres and homes are found in and around the province’s bigger towns, contributing to the unspoilt look and feel of much of the Eastern Cape – which is exactly why so many people choose to live here.
