Places to Spend New Year’s Eve in SA

Dec 30, 2018 | All, Lifestyle

It’s that time of the year – time to choose where you will be spending New Year’s Eve.

And it’s always best to work this out well in advance, to avoid not only FOMO but also the dread quarter to midnight traffic panic.

Whether you choose to spend your New Year’s Eve at a party, a celebration, or somewhere gentler with friends and family and a bottle of champers (or two); choosing the right location is key.

If you’ve left your New Year’s Eve plans this late in the day – here are a couple of places to spend New Year’s Eve (courtesy of SA Venues) -and who knows you might be scouting some properties while you’re there.

Cape Town

Cape Town is one of the few cities in the world where you can celebrate NYE atop a magnificent mountain, with a panoramic view of the myriad celebrations below.

Whilst Table Mountain Cable Way no longer allows revelers up to the top to ring in the New Year (last cable car down is 09:30pm), you can quite easily drive to one of the higher vantage points on Signal Hill and Table Mountain and watch the V&A Waterfront firework display from your car, or your picnic spot (Signal Hill is particularly popular for this reason). But remember, pack supplies and get there early, and by early we mean before sunset.

The Waterfront is your best bet if you want to be in the heart of the festivities, again arriving early is key. A more sedate option, but undoubtedly one of the most simultaneously chilled and festive places to spend New Year’s Eve, is the Sunset Concert at Kirstenbosch – for that you’ll need to stay in Newlands, and again planning is key, book early to avoid disappointment.

The Winelands

For a gentler, yet no less inebriated, celebration of all that is good try the winelands. Most wine farms lie within easy reach of Cape Town and many have NYE packages, some even have a ‘weekend in the country’ style New Year’s Eve celebration packages.

Downtime on a wine estate in either Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl, or even Tulbagh will ease you into 2019 with an emphasis on food, wine and good company (particularly if you go with a group of friends). Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, because of their historical merit and beauty, are two of the winelands’ most popular towns, but don’t discount Du Toitskloof, Groot Drakenstein, the little town of Klapmuts, Pniel and Simondium.

Remember, they say that however you spend your NYE will be how you spend your year, and a year filled with good food, good wine and great views is surely better than a year in a hastily chosen club filled with sweaty strangers.

If you’re looking for big bash parties, no-one does it quite like Jo’burg. The city skyline, the clubs, the pubs, the restaurants and the vibe combine to make this time of year in the cosmopolitan city a great place to be, no matter what your kind of celebration needs. Again, the key is to book tickets early, and also to put together a solid party crew, so you don’t find yourself with no-one to wish HAPPY NEW YEAR to at the crucial moment.

Sunshine Coast

Late nights on balmy beaches with warm waters to make you feel free of life’s burdens and open to new and fresh ideas, there’s nothing like it. The Sunshine Coast covers a substantial part of the Eastern Cape’s coastline, including Port Elizabeth and the quintessential seaside towns of Jeffrey’s Bay and Port Alfred.

If you find yourself in KZN on December 31st you’re in luck -Durban always hosts the hottest and happening parties for you to head into 2019. The infamous Ballito New Year’s Eve Street Party must be the biggest and loudest New Year’s Eve street party on Durban’s North Coast. If that’s too far out of the city for you then the Moses Mabhida Stadium complex is hosting various celebrations at its many venues for your enjoyment.

Where ever you choose to spend your New Year’s Eve this year, make sure you make the most of it.
