Weekend Getaways Within An Hour Or Two of Johannesburg

Nov 16, 2018 | All, Lifestyle

The hustle and bustle of the Johannesburg CBD is enough to make anyone want to take a weekend away.

At PropertyFox we have compiled a list of various destinations that are not too far from the central business district, so you wouldn’t have to go too far for your break.

If it’s a romantic weekend away filled with romance, a much-needed change of scenery with the kids or even just a break from the bustling noises of the world around you, then these destinations will give you the peace you need.

Joburg surrounds have so much to offer, so by no means are these the full extent of destinations available, just the ones that are close enough to feel like a break, but far enough to get away from the city!

Muldersdrift
Situated just 40 minutes or less outside of the Johannesburg city centre, Muldersdrift is a picturesque little area between Johannesburg and the Magaliesburg mountain range. Muldersdrift also forms part of the Crocodile Ramble as it is located within close proximity to the Kromdraai Valley on the Crocodile River. This also makes for a scenic tourist route generally regarded as the most popular of all the craft routes around South Africa. What’s more is that this particularly pretty part of the world is a gateway to the West Rand and forms of Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site. Muldersdrift offers you the perfect peace you need if you want to escape the city lifestyle for a day or two. The area provides peace and tranquility, yet offers you quick access and easy route to Fourways, Sandton, Randburg and even Pretoria if needs be.

Bronkhorstspruit
The little town that started as a railway station has grown to be a great weekend away destination, offering angling spots, beauty and tranquility. Situated on the border between the Gauteng and Mpumalanga provinces, the town of Bronkhorstspruit forms part of a triangle with Rayton and Bapsfontein (both found in Gauteng). This quaint farming community deserves a visit simply due to its sheer beauty and also because it’s home to the largest Buddhist temple and seminary in Africa, the Nan Hua Buddhist Temple. The Bronkhorstspruit dam is also a major attraction due to it being one of the most attractive bank angling spots in the country.

Magaliesberg
We all know that the Johannesburg CBD can become busy and one cannot always enjoy the beauty of the outdoors in a busy metropolis. In that case, Magaliesburg has the perfect solution to your soul’s yearning for a real outdoor experience, just about an hour and 10 minutes outside of Johannesburg. The Magaliesburg area offers a relaxing getaway from the Johannesburg CBD with a wide range of activities for the entire family. The sleepy town of Magaliesburg is situated below the Witwatersrand mountain range, hence its name. Driving in and around Magaliesburg makes for a pleasant afternoon meander — consisting of a local tourist route through the neighbouring Cradle of Humankind up to Hartebeespoort Dam, with a wealth of pottery, jewellery, crystals, sculpture and other crafts for enticing stops en route.

Parys
Situated on the banks of the Vaal River in the Free State Province and only an hour and 30 minutes from the Johannesburg city centre the quaint town of Parys (Afrikaans translation for Paris) has become the ideal place for many artists to settle. Coupled with these attractions, the town makes for the ideal breakaway close to Gauteng and big city centres. The town sports some lovely hiking trails in and around the centre and in the hilly countryside that surrounds it. Parys is scattered with art, antique and coffee shops, but it seems that it is the geological wonders of the Vredefort Dome that are without a doubt the stars of the town.

Bela Bela
Meaning “the pot that boils” in Setswana, Bela Bela is a picturesque destination located in the heart of the Waterburg area of the Limpopo Province and only an under a two-hour drive from the Johannesburg CBD. Formerly known as Warmbaths until 2002, Bela Bela derives its unique name from its geothermal hot springs around which the town is built. Due to its nature reserve and bushveld-type countryside surroundings, the destination makes for the perfect weekend away from the ever busy city. This getaway is perfect for a quick weekend break and with their range of wellness centres and spas coupled with the mild climate, you are guaranteed a sunny weekend away. If you are a big fan of the Big 5 then be sure to visit one of the game farms at the destination to get your dose of South Africa’s finest animals.
